Overview

Walsh is currently seeking a Safety Manager for the NYC DEP Water Shaft Project in our Transportation Division.

The Lead Safety Professional will be responsible to developing, implementing, and managing the Environmental, Health & Safety Program of the project.  The individual will also be responsible to managing the safety of EHS professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Works directly with the Project Manager and the management team to develop and implement an effective site-specific safety plan.
  • Assists project management in the coordination of the safety and health of subcontractor, vendor and owner personnel working on company project. Coordinates project safety programs with subcontractors. Assists in planning and coordinating work to minimize risks, and aggressively manage losses involving injuries or property damages.
  • Conducts daily inspections and evaluates the project site, equipment and processes for compliance with applicable local, state and federal regulations, as well as company and owner policies and procedures. 
  • Conducts accident investigations and completes incident reporting for Project Management review.
  • Accompanies injured employees to treatment and medical evaluation. Ensures all safety protocols are followed.
  • Advises Project Management on Industrial Hygiene protocols; performs Environmental Monitoring.
  • Manages Company’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy, ensuring proper testing for Pre-Employment, Vehicle Authorization, Reasonable Suspicion, Post-Accident, Random, and Follow-Up.
  • Provides training and education to Company personnel regarding safety requirements, including coordination of new hire safety orientation programs.
  • Administers the corporate SPAT process on assigned projects.
  • Completes and provides a weekly safety update to the Regional Safety Manager.

Qualifications

  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional granted by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and five (5) years of documented professional construction EHS management experience; or
  • Certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist granted by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and five (5) years of documented professional construction EHS management experience; or
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in safety, industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, environmental health and science, or related field and ten (10) years of documented professional construction EHS management experience

Position requires the following training certifications:

  • OSHA 30 (within last 5 years)
  • FA/CPR / AED certification (current)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience on tunnel or shaft projects
  • Three (3) years’ supervisory experience
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills
  • Previous work with NYC DEP
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 and specifically 1926.800 and associated MSHA regulations
  • Developing Safety Plans, JHA’s, and safety training modules
  • Developed Industrial Hygiene monitoring programs – worker exposure monitoring; CSE monitoring, general work area, etc.
  • Aggressively manages Worker’s Compensation / medical management cases

Training Certifications:

  • HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120), most recent 8-hr Refresher; 8-Hr. Supervisor
  • Competent Person training certifications in: Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, Excavation, NFPA 70E
