Archer Western, a member of The Walsh Group, is currently seeking a Chief Field Engineer for the Georgia Water Group, projects located around the Atlanta area. A background in Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants is needed. 


The Chief Field Engineer will supervise construction survey crews responsible for providing horizontal & vertical control, derived from contract plans & documents, to field production operations. They will implement 3D CAD (BIM) for this use of layout, coordination, clash detection, and as-builds from project inception through completion.

  • Manage a project’s Survey and Field Engineering department on a large Water/Wastewater Treatment plant through the use of cutting-edge 3D technology, including BIM, CAD, Lidar, and Drone implementation.
  • Establish and manage gathering field survey data through use of Conventional (robotic) and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods.  Can train staff on proper set up and operation of surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment for construction layout.  Manage as-builts and ensure compliance with project documents.
  • Assumes responsibility for the company survey equipment and oversees equipment maintenance and inventory.
  • Makes trigonometric calculations, such as adjusting traverses and calculation of coordinates, control points, quantities, and areas.
  • Trains crew members on the latest technology in surveying equipment and finds new and innovative ways of doing surveys
  • Assist in preparation and maintenance of BIM coordination schedules to stay on time and budget
  • Assist in auditing three-dimensional models received from design and trade partners to assess project risks
  • Run interference detection to detect design clashes in BIM to assist project team with coordination process
  • Construct three-dimensional models for various purposes
  • Refine existing technical processes and assist in developing, documenting, and implementing new technical processes and services for the successful pursuit and execution of projects


Proficient with some of the following:


  • Knowledge and experience with CAD and BIM systems (e.g. AutoDesk AutoCAD, AutoDesk ADT, AutoDesk Building Systems, AutoDesk Revit Suite, Bentley Systems, Tekla, Graphisoft Constructor, NavisWorks, Syncro, Innovaya)
  • Familiar with MEP coordination process including 3D Modeling utilizing Revit and/or Microstation in a project environment, scheduling and sequencing to demonstrate construction processes, project turnover for facility management, programming, file sharing, and collaboration platforms
  • Collaboration management and tools:
    o   critical thinking abilities
    o   oral, written, and graphic communication skills
    o   knowledge of construction contract documents
  •  Laser scanning capture and processing (Trimble, Recap)
  • UAS/Drone operations – license preferred
  • 5 years of work experience in 3D modeling on large projects, in coordinating with
  • Subcontractors and the design team, and in managing virtual design and construction process
  • 4-year degree in construction, engineering or other related field of study, or 10 years of survey in construction experience required
